Rising 4,981 feet above the sea level, Mount Popa offers a cool place
in the dry and hot plains of Central Myanmar. Especially after a trip
to Bagan you should go and relax at Popa, about 30 miles from Bagan
and 6 miles from Kyaukpadaung, where you’ll really be in the Mt.Olympia
of Myanmar. Even as you ascend the hill you’ll witness the change
in vegetation gradually from the tropics to the Mediterranean. You’ll
be surprised to see the apples, pears, oranges and coffee plantation.
It is just like an oasis in the desert. The road to Mount Popa ascends
sharply like a huge serpent meandering in and out of the hills and you’ll
visualize the breath-taking scenery and hills all perched up in the
sun.
Analyze its array of flowers like roses, chrysanthemums and African
daisies. The cool breeze will get into your lungs and will surely refresh
you proving beyond doubt that the journey is worth coming.
Once it is an active volcano but now it has been dead for years and
now is the happy abode of the Myanmar nats (Spirits) that dated back
to pre-Buddhist days. Here you’ll see the colorful images of all
the Myanmar 37 nats with their retinue. On the top of the mountain are
monasteries, pagodas and shrines of different styles all blends together
to fit in on the peak. It is a place rich in color. Reds and purples
combine with greens and nature pines under the brilliant skies as deep
sun splashed gorges and creeks bed slash through serrated mountain.
Many an artist has painted their work here. Some say it is Mount Fuji
of Myanmar with its majestic height towering over the plains. It is
for you to go and discover for your self the significant place of consecration
and the mysteries that lie solemn with splendor and magnificence.
Popa itself creates a mystery of unaccountable echoes, of more than
200 springs of clear crystals waters, of the shrines of the Nats and
of their heroic, daring and strange legends and episodes. In the night
the lights of the mount shine and wink while the pilgrims climb the
steps to offer homage to the image of Lord Buddha on the topmost of
the mount.
