Sagaing lies about 13 miles west of Mandalay on the west bank of the
Irrawaddy at the end of the range hills which bound the river banks.
The Irrawaddy touches the town of Sagaing in the east, south and west
giving it a peninsular configuration. The scene has a striking panorama
of indescribable grandeur, with cliffs and hills, slopes and peaks,
adorned with a rich profusion of white glistening pagodas, hundreds
of huge tamarind and other trees, luxuriant tropical vegetation springing
up from the alluvial soil constantly enriched by fresh deposits from
the river, and the great river itself winding its way with primeval
dignity.
