SALE (WHERE THE SEEDLESS PLUM GROW)

Sale, considered the twin town of Bagan, is an hour’s drive away from Kyaukpadaung. Legend has it that it was here that King Anawrahta received the caravan of white elephants bringing the 30 Tri-pitaka copies from Thaton in a solemn ceremony, and personally accompanied the valuable freight all the way to Bagan. There are still a number of sacred structures in and around sale dating from the Bagan period. During the colonial years, the town became a prosperous administrative and trading center.

Several fine wooden monasteries with magnificent woodcarvings date from roughly this period, and reflect the former wealth of this town, which today has more the air of a village. On the exterior of the Yoke-Son Monastery, legion artistically carved figures depict scenes from the jataka legends. Approximately 150 years old, the monastery was renovated in 1994, and has now been turned into a museum.

Interesting places in Sale: Yoke-Son-Monastery, lacquer statue, Thartana-Yaunggyi Meditation Monastery
